Jay Hunter, a Chicago native, attended the film department at the University of Colorado at Boulder and had the honor of studying under the eyes of legendary avant-garde filmmaker Stan Brakhage during the final years of his life. At the ripe age of 18, he photographed his first feature film (State of Grace, Super-16mm). By the time of graduation Jay had served as the DP on 3 independent feature films. His immediate post-collegiate work focused mainly on commercials and music videos.
Jay has worked as the Director of Photography on many scripted programs (Ricky Gervais Meets, 10 Items Or Less, and The Papdits) as well as numerous network reality tv programs (Steven Spielberg’s On The Lot , Rockstar Supernova). His clients include ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, MARK BURNETT PROD, MTV, DISCOVERY, BBC, UK 4, VH-1, SPIKE TV, TBS, ESPN, and HBO.
Jay recently photographed “Paper Heart”, a feature film staring Michael Cera (Superbad, Juno) and Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up). The film went on to win Best Screenplay at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Overture will release the film theatrically on August 7th.
In addition to his extensive work as a Director of Photography Jay has recently expanded into Directing. His Directing credits include; Jingles (CBS), The Chopping Block (NBC), Dr Drew’s Sex With Mom and Dad (MTV), and Soul Evidence (Sci Fi).
Jay Hunter is a member of The International Cinematographers Guild and the President of Tri Global Corporation (a film equipment rental house).
